Preacher:
Dr. Grant D. Vallance
  1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, [Jn 1:1]

And God cleaned the dust, dirt, and excrement from his friends’ feet.

  1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [Ge 1:1]

And God knelt down and served as the lowliest menial.

  1. Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendour and majesty. [Ps 104:1]

You divested yourself.
You wore underpants and a towel.

  1. May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy. [Ps 132:9]

May we wear humbleness and humility. May our garment be justice and mercy.

  1. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. [Heb 4:15]

Yes! We have a high priest who wept, despaired, was angry and shared in our frailty.

  1. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. [Ps 24:8]

A sovereign who consorted with thieves, prostitutes, and tax collectors.
An executed Emperor, who died a criminal’s death.

  1. In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him. [Proverbs 21:1]

His water washes mud from our feet, sin from our hearts, and it brings us to glorious resurrection.

  1. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. [Jn 13:14-15]

Lord we do this today. Lord help us do it tomorrow. And the day after that. Every day!

  1. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. [Jn 13:3]

We too have come from God. And we shall return to God.

  1. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. [2 Tim 2: 18]

Your resurrection has already taken place and our faith renews and grows.

  1. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, [Phil 3:11]

I want to know Christ too, the power of his resurrection, although I am not so keen on participating in his sufferings.
But how else do I understand who our God is and what our God has done?
Where the master goes the disciples must follow …
