Advent at St Michael's

By Elaine Bardwell - Posted on 04 December 2017

Advent is the first season of the Church's calendar and is a season of preparation for the festivities of Christmas and Epiphany. Many today are familiar with Advent Calendars and a daily counting down to Christmas. The tradition of the Advent Wreath is also well known with a candle representing one of the Advent themes each week of the season and sometimes a central candle for Christ as the Light of the World to take us on into Christmas itself. Our pairsh newsletter is carrying special prayers on the devotional page that can be used with the Advent wreath in church or at home.

We will be marking the beginning of the season with a special service at 10 am on 3rd December - the opening section is lengthened to include a fuller time for repentance and sprinkling with holy water as a reminder of our baptism. The readings and hymns in the Advent season are among the best loved in the whole year and we are also able to enjoy some of the first class keyboard repertoire written for Advent too.

On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th December those coming into church in the afternoon for the final sessions of the dance school will be able to indulge in hot drinks and seasonal nibbles.

As soon as our printed Christmas cards arrive we will be busy delivering one to every household in our parish - about 2,000 of them...but if you want to know the line up for services over Christmas see the "Christmas and Epiphany" section on the home page of the website.

On Sunday 10th we have an All Age Advent service - a good one to attend if you don't know anything about how the church marks this season. Afterwards we enjoy a special Christmas lunch together (please book and pay in advance). One of the social highlights of the year. This week we welcome our school in for a special Christmas concert. On Saturday 16th we will cleaning the church in readiness for our festivities on 24th and beyond.

On Sunday 17th we have Sunday School as usual alongside our sung Eucharist in church for Advent 3 in which we reflect on John the Baptist in particular as the one who announced the coming of the Messiah. The children will be lighting 3 candles on our Advent crown this week. Homewood Funerals, who recently opened a branch in our parish, will be providing refreshments for us after our service.

Preparations and rehearsals for our Christmas Crib service and other services will be going on in earnest in these last few days before 24th December.

So, pop along to church for Sundays at 10 am to spend time in reflection on the deeper meaning of all the stress and bustle of this time of year and get a different perspective on life. Everyone is welcome to join us.
